Student of the Month - May
Romulo Guerra
Romulo Guerra is a very hard working student. After working a twelve hour shift in maintenance at OK Foods, Romulo comes to the Adult Education Center where he studies for four or more hours daily. He studies Language Arts and Reading. Romulo is very good at math.
Romulo is a very serious student. While he is here at the AEC he takes few breaks because his study time is precious. However, he is always open to helping his fellow students. Every day when he comes to the Reading Lab he looks for a certain older woman student. He gives her a hug, and she loves him like a mother. He is the kind of student that will succeed at whatever he endeavors.
Romulo and his mother came to the United States from El Salvador four years ago. Since he first arrived in the Fort Smith area, Romulo has earned a GED in Spanish, but that is not enough for him. He also wants to earn the GED in English. His long term goal is to gain a college degree in elementary education.
“I want to become a teacher,” says Romulo.
Romulo’s favorite free time activity is playing soccer.

The Student of the Month is chosen by individual instructors. Each instructor is allotted one student of the month for the year. This makes it very difficult to choose because there are many students that the instructor would like to see have an award.
The award is based on the three “A’s”, Attendance, the students overall attendance to AEC classes, Attitude, the students attitude about their learning, and Advancement, the students advancement on their individual school related goals.
A Student of the Month plaque and a dozen cinnamon rolls are presented to every Student of the Month. These awards are provided by our Partner in Education, Pharis Broadcasting, which owns “Kool Oldies 104.7” radio station, Custom Awards & Engraving as well as other businesses in the area. Huge thanks to Pharis Broadcasting for providing these awards.
