Gladys Piriz
Gladys Piriz de Ruiz was
born in Montevido, Uruguay on September 15, 1928. She was the
oldest of five children. Both of her parents were born in
Uruguay as well. Gladys started working at a young age in a
glass factory in the design department. She met Rubi Ruiz.
They dated for a few years and married in April 1953. They were
married for five years before having children. Silvia was born
in 1958 and Doris in 1960. Gladys continued to work at the
glass factory until her youngest daughter turned 2 years old.
In 1972 Rubi was transferred to Bogota, Columbia with his
company International Harvest Company. The family lived there
for five years, but every Christmas the family would return to
Uruguay for vacations. In 1977 they came to the United States
to live in Miami, FL with Rubi’s work. Gladys started taking
English classes in Miami for a few years, but since the Hispanic
community is quite large in Miami, she never had much of a
chance to practice her English.
Gladys and her husband also lived in Racine, Wisconsin for seven
years, and later retired in Jupiter, FL for a few years. They
finally decided to move to Fort Smith to be closer to their
daughters. Soon after, Rubi became ill and passed away in March
2000. Gladys now lives in Fort Smith across the street from her
daughter Silvia and her family.
Gladys recently celebrated her 80th birthday, but she
keeps her mind and her body active by studying English at the
AEC and working out at Mercy Fitness Center.
