Student of the Month–July

Student of the Month -- Christina Ly

Christina Ly came to the United States in 1980.  She was very glad to get here because she had spent the previous year in a Malaysian Refugee camp for Vietnamese Refugees.  This was a very difficult time for Ms. Ly and her 9 year old daughter, Paulina, who fled Vietnam by boat.  For them to be accepted, Christina had to have enough gold in bullion (bars).  In Vietnam Ms. Ly owned her sewing business, plus she bought and sold goods in order to save the 19 gold bullion required for them to come to the United States; 10 bullion for herself and 9 for her daughter.

Ms. Ly and her daughter finally arrived in Fort Smith in 1980.  Her daughter now lives in Mississippi, is married, and has 2 children.

Ms. Ly worked at a local manufacturer for almost to 20 years.  She also worked part time at a local restaurant, where she still works part time.

When Ms. Ly has free time she enjoys sewing.  She also teaches Sunday School, and is extremely serious about her church activities.

Christina is very determined about her studies.  She often spends 10 – 12 hours at school, and has accrued 1,428 hours of study since the beginning of 2008 school year.  (The average for most students is more like 400- 600 hours.) She spends time in classes and in the Reading and Learning Labs.  Her studying has paid off!  She is really near to passing the GED tests.   She has improved all of her skills since she began studying.  Beginning at the ESL level and progressing to the GED level in one year is real progress, and considerable work!

Congratulations Christina on being chosen Student of the Month! You will achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.  You have the self-determination to make it happen!
